This week on Hard Beautiful Journey, I welcome my good friend Tina McCafferty. Tina and I met while enrolled in a business course, and I immediately knew this was going to be a lifelong friendship.
In this episode, Tina takes us on a wild ride down not one, not two, but three of her marriages. She points out how her naiveness and trusting nature allowed her first husband to have an affair, which then contributed to her low self-esteem, resulting in a second marriage she did not want. When husband number three came around, all it took was three months of dating before sealing the deal, but now 24 years later, they’re still happily married. Third time really is a charm.
As we switch gears, Tina reveals to us her truly hard, beautiful journey. In 2001, her older sister Susan got pregnant with her second child and in the same year, was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. Nine months later, their mother was diagnosed with colon cancer, also terminal.
Both women fought as hard as they could but, in the end, passed away six months apart. Riddled with grief and excitement from news of Tina’s miracle pregnancy brought up complicated feelings.
In 2014 her father passed from a bad heart, and just two years later, her younger sister met the same fate but with inflammatory breast cancer. Having lost four nuclear family members reinforced Tina’s gratitude for her remaining siblings, husband, and three children.
Through all the loss, Tina continued to persist like the fighter she is.
